We have a soap dispenser built into our kitchen sink and it never runs out of soap. Of course it is my husband who fills it along with a myriad other things that are his wont. Have I have ever acknowledged this and thanked him? Do you think I should make a point of doing so?
I hope you said ‘yes’ to the latter, and now that I have written about it, I will likely mention it and thank him this evening. It is one of many things he does that keeps things running smoothly. And while he knows I appreciate him in general, the point is that there is still value in expressing appreciation for specific little things that make my life easier.
Some of you are probably having a fit about now and cursing me for not gushing praise on a husband who takes it upon himself to keep the soap from running out. I wonder if you would feel the same way if I neglected to acknowledge an employee who kept the soap dispenser full. Or the supply cabinet full. Or the shop floor organized and clean. Or projects on time. Or customers happy. Or employees happy. Or profits up.
If someone is reliably making your life easier or your business better, take note. Make a point of telling him or her that you appreciate it. This will not only make this person feel appreciated and motivated, it will make you feel better too. Happier because you are noticing the things that are working well. Happier because you have taken time to express your appreciation for someone else.
