The Sincerest Form of Flattery

I’ve been writing about the tremendous power of strategic clarity to improve profits, productivity, confidence, and employee empowerment since 2004. My cumulative writings would fill more than six fat books. You can find my articles on numerous websites, especially Forbes.com and LinkedIn, in addition to UncommonClarity.com. Some of you may have read a significant portion of those articles as newsletter subscribers and social media followers from the beginning.

While my clients and many of you recognized the power and dimensions of clarity early on, I have to admit that it has been frustrating at times to get this transformative message the attention it deserves. Well, I think it is finally happening. Clarity is hitting the mainstream!

Here are just two examples I have encountered recently that are indicative of the growing appreciation for clarity:

Marcus Buckingham, author and business consultant:
Clarity is the antidote to anxiety, and therefore clarity is the preoccupation of the effective leader. If you do nothing else as a leader, be clear.

When talking about his book, “The Advantage,” Patrick Lencioni says “Organizational health is about making a company function effectively by building a cohesive leadership team, establishing real clarity among those leaders, communicating that clarity to everyone within the organization and putting in place just enough structure to reinforce that clarity going forward.” Clarity appears in three of the four section titles – create it, over communicate it, reinforce it. That makes clarity pretty important!

Unfortunately, most of the people who are starting to talk about clarity still think it is only about the clarity of the company vision, priorities, and expectations. That’s important, of course, but not enough for effective clarity.

Furthermore, it is one thing to recognize the value of clarity, and it is equally easy to admonish people to “be clear!” but what does that really mean? How do you know if you are being clear? And how many people really know how to create clarity? Or know how to teach others to be clear? Unfortunately, the answer still is too few! Nonetheless, I sense progress!

To learn a little about what why so many still don’t understand the true power of clarity, download the introduction from my book, The Clarity Papers. This is the only book that fully explains the power of clarity, the surprising lack of clarity that is the norm, and how to create transformative clarity, not just high-level priorities and expectations.

Do you treasure clarity? If so, please help me spread the word by sharing this newsletter and my posts on LinkedIn and Twitter!
